The week ends

So the sun goes down on the first week.



All in all things going pretty well. Got a couple of good leads for deskspace and sorted out a new car for the next few months. Walked down into Sea Point today to have a look around and get my phone topped up. A pretty big swell was creating some great rollers onto the rocks.

Hit the outdoor pools this morning, only manged 6 lengths.

So here she is. Not quite the picture of classic motoring we had in mind. It's a shame, I'm sure bugs are really great little cars when they've have some care and attention, but this one was sadly lacking the love.

The mist rolls in

The whole city sat under a blanket of mist this morning. 8am.

Swimming before work

Having the sun shining does make you want tot get up and goet out. Unlike yesterday, I managed to haul myswlf to the outdoor pools along the coast. For about 80p your get the unheated salt water pool. Great way to staert the day. After a salty 8 lengths I headed into check out the V&A waterfront.

30 degree heat with a temperature

Had the longest day ever and believe me whilst I love the heat here battling a temperature isn't at all fun. Going for a lie down now, more once I can remember my own name again!

29ºC, BMX's and the City

Today started very early. Nicky had to head into town to check out some new offices. Given the 2 hour time difference that meant i was waking at 6am. One thing the sun does is get you out of bed. I planned to go and have a swim in one of the outdoor pools but instead decided to ride into the city to get my bearings - swimming would have been a wiser idea given the heat. The city was buzzing, found the new flat, under which there was a pretty busy market. Cycling in the grid of the city was pretty wild. A kin to New York but with less rules - gonna take a bit of getting used to. One thing that amazes me is the complete lack of bikes on the road - I've seen about 4 so far.

It's so hot. My Farmers tan is in full swing with no sign of retreat. Sat with feet in the little splash pool while my lunch went down - nice

Over and out

Day 1, on Day2. Beetles, Beaches, Bikes

Off to pick up the rental car. We opted for a cheep and cheerfull Beetle from 'Best Beetle'. We were picked up from the house by what seemed like someones gran the the hottest Nissan Sunny i've ever been in. 30 minutes out of town we located 'Best Beetle'. Met the proprieter who had the biggest hands I've ever seen and sat down to go through the rental contract - i've signed less bits of paper to mortgage the house!

We finally got sight of out beloved machine around half and hour later and my word what a machine. 1971 VW Beetle, 1300cc, mixed body colour, red leather sports seats and seat belts. Pictures to come. The inventory guy took us round the car and showed us all the dinks and bumps and marked them on a handover sheet - the marks hardly 'stone chips', but the lack of paint in places at least reassured us that the car was indeed made of metal. We were taken for a little test drive and shown the vehicles 'little quirks' and then let loose on the open road. Fear to the point of wanting to swim with sharks doesn't come close to describing that 30km drive back to town.

More to come on the beetle - we could be here all day. Safe to say the cars probably going back to the man with big hands.

Thankfully the rest of the day was less like feeding wild Lions. I got on the old Push Iron set (pumped the tyres and swapped over the brakes - is it only uk MTB's that has the front brake on the right - I had to do this with the Bianchi in Italy too) and rolled up the sea front, taking in the beeches and views. Awesome coast. Had a little paddle, got very hot and came home again.



Nicky'd been sleeping whist I'd been cruising so we then both went for a little drive to Camps Bay and then to take in views of the city. Campy Bay is pretty much the rich end of town with Tarquins and Tabethas all over the beach front. A little bit of West London right here in South Africa.

To finish off the day we hit downtown for some food. Can't remember the name of the place but it was awesome. Great value. I had a Prawn, Squid and 'Line Fish' curry and Nicky had Tuna with Wasabi mash.

Encountered another Cape Town point of interest. Throughout down town guys with high vis jackets 'watch' your car for you, slip them 5 rand when you leave and everybody's happy. they even help you park in and arms waving, not sure which direction to move kind of way.

Both very tired now.
